MPF Webinar: A Primer on Plant Morphology

February 28, 2024 @ 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm CST

A red paintbrush plant on a green prairie

Puzzled by petioles? Baffled by bracts? Stumped by stigmas? Plants are made up of intricate parts, and all these parts have names. Join Dr. Michelle Bowe as she helps you identify plant parts, recognize how they differ in shape, size, and texture from species to species, and learn the language of plant morphology. You will come away with more tools to help identify and appreciate the magnificent world of plants.

This webinar will take place on Zoom and will include a presentation, followed by a Q&A session.

Cost: Free

Michelle Bowe grew up in South Carolina where she explored the woods and meadows with her childhood best friend and became fascinated by all of the plant life around creeks and in the forest. In high school, she made a leaf collection (that she still has!), and the species are still among those she currently teaches. She went to Wofford College in South Carolina as a biology major and fell in love with botany. She then pursued a PhD at Vanderbilt University, studying seed plant evolution using molecular data and morphology. Her first faculty position soon followed at Frostburg State University in Maryland, and then in 2002, she moved to Springfield to teach at Missouri State University. Courses she’s taught include Plant Taxonomy, Identification of Woody Plants, Vascular Plant Morphology, and Applications of Molecular Techniques.
