Southwest Illinois Workshop: Stormwater Challenges & Native Plant Solutions
START DATE: 2/21/2025
END DATE: 2/21/2025
DESCRIPTION: The goal of this workshop is to explore native landscape solutions to manage stormwater and protect streams and other aquatic ecosystems. During this half-day event, speakers will present about stormwater management challenges at smaller residential, larger landowner, and community scales. Participants will learn about specific landscape applications to address stormwater management in the region, and increase their knowledge of policies to fund and implement stormwater management.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
–Explore ecology, hydrology and the integration of natural systems in the public infrastructure system and be able to explain how resilient design can be leveraged to solve modern engineering problems.
–Gain familiarity with the nexus of national historic sites and Landscape Architecture, and explore equitable design by learning about a project based on collaboration with and giving voice to the Osage Nation.
–Be aware how green infrastructure and habitat creation can be leveraged within the public realm to create recreation, education and play opportunities.
–Understand how private equity can positively influence public space.
–Learn about concepts related to landscape design, construction, and maintenance as they relate to stormwater and native plant gardens.
–Become familiar with the adaptability of bioretention basins within green infrastructure, including how bioretention basins can be used in conjunction with other stormwater infrastructure such as permeable pavement, green roofs, and bioswales to increase the efficiency of the individual systems.
–Be able to identify and evaluate key strategies for enhancing stormwater detention drain sites to improve water quality and promote ecological health as water enters creek systems, including best practices for design, plant selection, and maintenance.
–Learn about native plant palettes and planting designs to reduce flood risk, cool heat island impact, streamline maintenance, and increase community amenities in an urban context.
